Day 16 : Homeward Bound The competition from taxi drivers anywhere in India is fierce, but we had to turn down all the offers to take us to the airport, even though they were at a better price. You see again we were going to be good to our word, and had promised Che Guevara that he could take us to the airport this morning. A promise is a promise. It was gone 7.a.m. and he was there waiting for us, as bright as a button. The trip to the airport was no more than a formality taking less than thirty minutes on the almost empty roads. I wondered where everyone was? No one seemed to care that we were leaving, and to be honest no one really knew that we had arrived in the first place, we were now just another couple of faces in this country of over one billion people. A country that even with it's problems, still manages to exist in the modern world, even though in all reality it is still a good way behind most others in terms of addressing it's major problems. This is a country that gives the visitor some great highs and lows, and you get to experience all the emotions and senses as you make your way around taking in the sights, sounds, smells and noise of this chaotic at times, yet serenely tranquil at other times. A land of beauty and ugliness rolled into one. The trip home was very uneventful with the plane from Chennai taking off on time, and the connection in Dubai just as efficient. I tried to catch up on the movies during the flight, but neither Harry Potter, nor the Casius Clay story held that much appeal to me, I was still in India with my thoughts running me through what I had experienced. While on the road it had seemed like a long trip, but as i sat there on the plane I was finding it hard to remember a lot of it. Again we had experienced a lot in a short space of time, and it's probably for that reason more than anything I made these notes. This Travelogue will serve to remind me of all the things we saw and done, it will help prompt me when I'm looking for another story to bore people shitless with, but more than that, I hope it will entertain and give an insight to you the reader. Nick and I got talking to a young girl on the train from London on our way home. She was genuinely interested in our trip, saying that she would love to do something like that, but all her friend are more interested in 18 -30 style clubbing holidays. All I could say to her and anyone else that is thinking of going to India is "Just do it" you won't be disappointed. End. |
